USS John Griffith
The USS John Griffith was a schooner that was purchased by the Navy on 16 September 1861, outfitted with a mortar and commissioned at the Brooklyn Navy Yard 20 January 1862, Lt. K. Randolph Breese commanding.
The John Griffith was assigned to the David Porter's Mortar Flotilla within the West Gulf Blockading Squadron and in that capacity participated in the battle of Forts Jackson and St. Philip and the fall of New Orleans, & the attack on Vicksburg. She remained in the squadron until ordered North 18 May 1864 and later reassigned to the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron.
