USS De Soto
The USS De Soto was a sidewheel wooden steamer purchased 21 August 1861 at New York, armed and commissioned with CDR William M. Walker commanding.
She sailed for the Gulf on 19 November 1861, arriving off Southwest Pass 11 December 1861. She was sent north for repairs in the autumn of 1862 and upon return in February 1863, was re-assigned to the East Gulf Squadron.
Dimensions: Length, 253'; beam, 38'; depth, 26"; tonnage, 1675.
Battery (as of 31 DEC 1862): 1 IX-inch Dahlgren S. B., 1 30-pdr Parrott rifle, 6 32 pdr cwt, 2 12-pdr S.B.
