Charles Gastmeier

Seaman, USS Arthur

Charles Gastmeier was born c1839 in Bremen, Germany. He enlisted in the Navy in New York City on 15 November 1861 as a seaman for a three year contract[1]. At some point he was attached to the USS Arthur, then operating off the coast of Texas in support of the Union blockade.

Per Navy records, he was killed on 1 March 1862[2] after being struck by a windlass aboard the Arthur[3]. He was about 22-23 years old and had been in the Navy for just over five months.
